Seafood marinara becomes weeknight faire when you get a little help from prepared pasta sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 bag fresh mussels
  • 1 lb large shrimp, peeled and cleaned
  • 1 large piece of flounder
  • 2 28 oz cans of chunky crushed tomatoes
  • 2 26 oz jars of cabernet marinara
  • 2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes or to taste
  • 1 tbsp dry mustard
  • 4-5 cups water
  • 2 loaves crusty bread

Method

In a large stock pot, add tomatoes, marinara, flounder, pepper flakes and dry mustard. Stir and add water, little by little, to desired consistency. Cook at a simmer for at least 1 hour. Add mussels and cook until they open, 5-7 minutes. Add shrimp literally 5 minutes before serving. Serve by itself or with pasta.

Notes: The flounder, or any white fish, adds a wonderful texture to the sauce. If you think bottled sauce is cheating, you have to use a burgundy wine in a homemade sauce. That is the key to the flavor. Serve with crusty bread for sopping up the sauce.

Number of Servings: 6-8
